What 16 Years working with FND Has Revealed

Living with Functional Neurological Disorder can feel like being trapped. Not just by symptoms, but by your body, your thoughts, your environment, and the very systems around you mean to support you. FiND Your Way offers a different lens. Something to understand and learn to navigate as we move from a life that feels arrested… to a life that becomes active again.

This book was written from the inside of the FND experience

What started with textbooks and theory was shaped and refined from years of sitting with people, understanding what helped, what didn’t and what was missing. This book is both the story of that learning and the resources that have emerged from it, to support people to find their way through the maze of FND.

The FND Maze

Living with FND can feel like being inside a maze.

  • Internal: your nervous system, thoughts, emotions, identity

  • External: family, work, expectations, healthcare

These are not separate. They interact, reinforce each other, and over time can create loops that are hard to exit.

This is why insight alone is often not enough.

And why so many people remain stuck.

From Little i to Big I

A self with more access to choice and possibility.

Inside the maze, many people become “little i”:

  • overwhelmed

  • voiceless

  • reactive

A version of self shaped by limitation.

This book supports a shift.

To Big I:

  • aware

  • connected

  • able to respond

The 5 Keys

Over years of clinical work, a pattern emerged.

Movement out of the maze is not random. It follows a process.

The book introduces 5 capacities:

  1. Awareness

  2. Acknowledge the Barrier

  3. Allow the Process

  4. Attention to What Is Shifting

  5. Appreciate What That Change Allows

These are capacities that change how you relate to what is happening.

The Shift

From managing symptoms to something different.

The goal is not simply symptom reduction.

It is life activation.

A shift from:

  • trapped → having options

  • arrested → beginning to move

  • disconnected → feeling more alive

This is not immediate. But it is possible.
